The ANU has seven Colleges, made up of the research and education Centres, Schools and Faculties that contribute to the various broad disciplines. The ANU Colleges link research and teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate and higher degree levels, and give the base to achieve research at the highest standards of excellence, educational programs informed by current research and active researchers that give students a memorably good experience of ANU. The Faculty of Asian Studies is part of the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. The Faculty is itself a unique Australian institution, and as such possesses particular national roles. Faculty members feel a responsibility not only to carry out high-quality teaching and research, but also to engage in a relatively wide range of public activities. These activities include: work with government, the media and the broader community. Members of Faculty also provide specialist advice and play an active role in appropriate professional bodies. Perhaps our greatest national contribution, however, is through our graduates, many of whom have obtained positions that are vital to Australia’s successful engagement with the Asian region. The Faculty is committed to offering a broad range of Asian language teaching, and we continue to stress a language-based knowledge of contemporary Asia. The Faculty’s language teaching enjoys a high international reputation. Faculty members, who include representatives of a range of social science and humanities disciplines, tend to emphasise the type of analysis that stresses cultural and language knowledge. They insist that Australian political and commercial interests in the region cannot be sustained on the basis of a superficial knowledge that ignores the deep historical and social processes that determine the direction of change in Asian society. It is for this reason that the Faculty places such a high a value on language training, including knowledge of the classical languages of the region. It is partly for this reason too that we continue to teach courses on the early history and civilizations of Asia, as well as on current political, strategic, social and economic developments. Research in the Faculty is concerned with the advancement of knowledge in its disciplines, in both theoretical and applied areas, and covers a wide range of topics. Faculty members regularly contribute to leading academic and professional journals, and publish books, monographs and working papers. ... Seminars and Events. ANU College of Asia and the Pacific ...
